The exhibition explores a close connection between hand-held ceramic objects and large-scale urban interventions – from the glazed household items that inspire whole building facades to the manufacturers using scaled-up processes familiar to studio potters. Both traditional production methods and innovative technology are equally embraced in the show, with hand-crafted pieces sitting alongside mass ceramic production and robotic technology. Collaboration is at the heart of the exhibition and events programme as we share the journey of unique partnerships that push boundaries and produce inspirational buildings. Newly completed projects, buildings still under construction, handmade items and classic examples of ceramics in architecture all come together to help tell the story of ceramics. With a complete internal redecoration, new flooring, furniture and fittings, the feedback from the community was exceptionally positive and thankful, as were comments from the local MPs and trustees in attendance.As a charity organisation, Southwark Pensioners Centre is a crucial part of many people's lives in the neighbourhood, always busy with activites, events and classes, and provides a much needed support system and friendship to local over 50s. To be able to help such a large number of people with a refreshed facility, through creative collaboration and simple but complimentary design ideas, has been a very fulfilling and rewarding process. Lydia is a fully qualified Architect, ARB registered and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.Architect Lydia Johnson established Fettle Studio in 2018 to pursue her two passions: architecture and ceramics. Her work has varied in scale, from homes, workspace and community projects, to tableware, lighting and public art commissions. Lydia works closely with each of her clients, carefully listening to their brief, challenges and ambitions for the project. She uses her knowledge and understanding of good spatial design and construction from her years in practice, to create thoughtful, enjoyable, well crafted proposals, which bring delight and comfort to the people who use them.Lydia has extensive experience in housing design, urban regeneration and refurbishments for community and arts uses. She spent her formative career at Stirling Prize winning practice,&nbsp;Mae Architects, followed by multi-award winning firm,&nbsp;Citizens Design Bureau, before going ‘full Fettle’ in 2021.Lydia holds a degree in Architecture and Planning at UWE Bristol, achieving First Class Honours in 2010. Following two years working on heritage and housing projects in Bath, she moved to London for her Masters at the University of Westminster, where she received Distinction. Alongside her architectural education and time in practice, Lydia undertook freelance commissions and managed small scale design projects which set the foundations for starting her own business. Based in Leyton, East London, Lydia is a founding member and chair of the Leyton Midland Collective, a voluntary community organisation established in 2024 to empower local people, bring people together, and make wonderful things in the area. She plays a central role in delivering the Leyton Arts Festival and in progressing the community-led proposal to reopen Brooks Farm. Beyond architecture and placemaking, Lydia’s interests and skills in design and making has extended to interiors and homewares, making ceramic tiles for kitchens and facades, as well as lampshades and tableware. Her ceramic work continues the journey she began as a student, using primarily slip-casting techniques with modular moulds to create functional and decorative wares, which play with form and geometry, and celebrate the tactile and sensual qualities of liquid clay. In 2019/20, she co-curated a major exhibition with the Building Centre, entitled Hand Held to Super Scale: Building with Ceramics, which featured her own work alongside other master makers and architects, including renowned artists Grayson Perry, Kate Malone and others.&nbsp; Lydia has been a tutor and visiting lecturer for a number of architecture schools, including London Metropolitan University in 2017-18 where she taught Unit 5 with Mae Architects, the London School of Architecture, and&nbsp;The Bartlett, UCL, most recently as a BioID thesis tutor, guiding students as they research porous ceramics and bioreceptive facade materials. The kitchen was pushed to the rear and extended to include dining and living areas, with two large glazed double doors opening to the garden. The two rooms in the existing house both celebrate generous proportions and original features in their refurbishment as bedrooms. The design of the tiles features tall elegant proportions. Externally, the teal-glazed ceramic is paired with fine, dark grey aluminium windows and rainwater goods. Internally, a palette of teal and navy blues in the kitchen is balanced with natural cork flooring and rich orangey furnishings and fine black ironmongery &amp; lighting details. This project in St James, Walthamstow, maintained the footprint and structural principles of the existing terraced house, whilst creating a large new light and contemporary kitchen-dining space connecting to the garden. The tight budget was invested in a few key elements to maximise the quality of living space - windows, worktop and window seat. Finishes are carefully chosen to create a warm, tactile and individual feel to the space, using natural and recycled materials, with characterful textures and patterns, including terracotta lampshades by Fettle Studio.“We love our kitchen. It’s made a big difference to our lives. Someone popped over to deliver something at the weekend and just said “Wow this house is amazing!”. We completely agree and it’s all thanks to Lydia“ The catalyst for the refurbishment was the clients’ desire to replace their existing boiler with an Air Source Heat Pump, providing a clean sustainable way to heat their home without gas or reliance on the Grid. The layout merged the redundant spare room in the middle of the plan with the existing kitchen at the rear, which was dark and enclosed. New large windows were proposed to engage with the garden, surrounded by natural timber frames, shelving and window seat. The scheme also inserts a larder and cloaks cupboard in the depth of the plan, behind the new kitchen. <img width="2651" height="2651" width_o="2651" height_o="2651" Workspace provider, Needspace, recognised the need to upgrade the offering to provide shared kitchen, breakout and amenity spaces for their tenants. <img width="2448" height="691" width_o="2448" as a series of linked shared spaces, connecting onto the internal corridor with lined openings, top lit via double height voids, zoned through colour and geometry, with industrial materials and difference to your home. In this case, extending just 1.5m enabled the creation of a spacious, comfortable and well proportioned kitchen in this family home in Leyton. The space is orientated around a large family dining table, with kitchen counter on one side and joinery storage wall on the other. Large, naturally framed composite glazing opens the kitchen onto the garden. The dark stone terrazzo floor gives a solid base to the kitchen, with variations in speckled colours picking up on interior finishes throughout the space, with a reflectant quality to gently bounce light deep into the room. The joinery backdrop comprises deep shelves, larder and laundry, using soft grey-green Valchromat.
