Fettle Studio / Sudbury Neighbourhood Centre

In 2016 Lydia was approached directly to carry out a feasibility study for the refurbishment of Sudbury Neighbourhood Centre, a community and adult day care facility near Wembley, north west London. The project received the go-ahead in 2017 for Fettle Studio and the team to prepare full design proposals and planning application for refurbishment and extension of the centre.

The proposal provides a new entrance, with a welcoming, safe and secure point of entry to the centre, including reception and cafe. Beyond this, the day care centre and community hall are revitalised to create a contemporary, flexible, light and friendly, ‘home from home’ feel. A new timber framed extension reaches out and connects with the well established garden.

The approach to material and colour palette is simple, honest and robust. Details are repeated details throughout to create familiarity, passive wayfinding and legibility, and uniting old and new by referencing the existing timber parquet floor of the original community hall.

The project received planning approval in November 2018. The project is being carried out in incremental phases, alongside the fundraising effort and amid the Covid 19 pandemic.
