Fettle Studio / St Mark’s Studios, N7

St Mark’s Studios is a large scale workspace located within a converted church in Islington.

The church was previously converted into offices in the 2000s and divided up into cellular workspaces. Client and workspace provider, Needspace, recognised the need to upgrade the offering to provide shared breakout and amenity spaces, including kitchenette and meeting areas, for their tenants.

Working with the existing structure and removing lightweight partitions, four offices were merged into a new open plan breakout space for tenants, accessed from the Ground Floor Reception via new glazed doors. The space enjoys natural light on both sides, zoned with comfy seating towards the front and a cafe-style area to the rear, near to a new self-service kitchen and social island. Two new large meeting rooms are arranged along the long side wall, providing a dramatic colourful backdrop to the space and harking to the architectural form of the church pediment outside. Individual meeting booths and a further meeting space are tucked to the rear.

Across the Reception, previously awkward circulation space, office and meeting room were rearranged to provide two larger workspaces with natural light and visual connections onto the new internal ‘street’.

Fettle Studio undertook all architectural and interior design services, including layout, selection of finishes and loose furnishings, bespoke furniture and fitted joinery design, and coordination with suppliers, fabricators and contractors, to see the project from start to completion.
