Southwark Pensioners Centre2013-14
RIBA Stages 1-4
Southwark Pensioners Centre is a local asset, important to the lives of many people and groups in the local community by providing vital support, care and social activities.
In 2013, Lydia's advice was sought to revive the tired interior to create warm, inviting and functional spaces for people to spend time. The centre is located over two floors: the ground floor reception is a street-facing, shop-front type space, with offices and small meeting rooms beyond. Below ground in the basement are a number of activity, meeting and IT rooms and sanitary facilities. Lydia's approach was to create spaces that were bright and uplifting, evoking the spirit of the SPC brand and community purpose.
The interior refurbishment was carried out over Christmas 2013, with the launch event in Easter 2014, fronted by local Labour MP, Harriet Harman. The shop front and signage was completed in May 2014.
Lydia created the concept design for the centre's refurbishment, provided design advice to the client throughout the design and construction phases, and prepared the specification and schedules for finishes and furnishings throughout. Working with the client, Lydia managed the tender process to obtain a contractor to carry out the works, and sourced the furniture and fittings for delivery to the centre.
