Fettle Studio / Northcote Kitchen, E17

This home renovation breathed new life and energy into the rear ground floor spaces at this semi-detached Victorian town house in Walthamstow.

Instead of extending, the project actually reduces existing floorspace with the removal of a lean-to utility room, which was damp, cold and obtrusive in both the home and the garden. The kitchen is revitalised, bringing colour, light and joy - opening up long views of the garden from this and other rooms in the house, reinstating formerly obscured windows, and utilising colour to create a playful and personal kitchen-dining space for daily family life.

A widened opening with new bi-fold doors connects the dining space fully to the garden, whilst new high performance timber windows are inserted into existing structural openings on the side return, celebrating their charm and character.

The rendered impression of the former lean-to is celebrated as part of a white washed patchwork on the side wall, bringing texture and character to this mismatched elevation.
